It's been years since I read any of his stuff, but he had a character called the chicken man or something.

We have a winnah!

The first book of his I read was "Alan Mendelsohn, the Boy from Mars", shortly followed by "The Hoboken Chicken Emergency". It's about a kid who adopts a 5-foot, 260-pound chicken. Invariably, the bird gets loose on the streets of Hoboken, and hilarity ensues.
